My thoughts
When I first heard the words “coverless duvet” I pulled a bit of a face. No cover? Just… the duvet, out in the open, with no jacket on? It sounded faintly wrong, like the bedding equivalent of going out without my knickers on (no judgement if that’s your thing). But after taking the Night Lark Coverless Duvet on a recent solo chilly camping trip, I’m a total convert, so let me explain why I think it’s so good.
Warm and cosy
When deciding what to pack into limited boot space, every piece of camping gear I take is always a trade-off between the practicalities of pack size and comfort. Achieving maximum camping comfort together with a cute homey aesthetic isn’t always easy in my mid-size SUV and knowing the coverless duvet was king size, I was initially concerned it would rival my 12 tog winter duvet, which is absolutely huge and, being down-filled, also very heavy.
Thankfully, the Night Lark is nowhere near as bulky or heavy, taking up roughly the same amount of room as my single Robens winter sleeping bag. So far so good, but could it keep a perpetually cold me warm during a long weekend of torrential rain and low double-figure temperatures?
Once it was on my camp bed it did exactly what a good winter duvet should do, keeping me warm and properly cosy throughout a 4 day camping trip which felt at times, properly chilly. No shivering and no extra blankets required.
An American comforter?
There are few positives from the USA that I feel are worth emulating, but their use of comforters over duvets is a time-saver that’s absolutely worth adopting. Whilst here in the UK, duvets always require the addition of a duvet cover, the comforter is an all-in-one duvet with cover.
I’ll admit the hygiene ick was real for me at first, and it’s one of the main reasons I also don’t tend to use sleeping bags. We’re conditioned in the UK to think that our beloved duvets with separate covers are the hygienic choice, but with the coverless duvet, you just pop the entire thing in the washing machine. The king size needs a 10kg drum, and it tumble dries in about 90 minutes (my tumble dryer is terrible, I’d be lucky if something this big was dry in 3-4 business days), and washing the entire thing makes it arguably more hygienic than just washing the cover.
Gorgeous patterns
I went for the Vintage Meadow design, a lovely soft floral with cosy cottagecore vibes. The hard part is the fact that Night Lark has loads of lovely colours and patterns available, from bold child-friendly prints to classic florals and everything in between, so be prepared to spend ten minutes or more just scrolling before you’re able to choose your favourite.
The coverless duvet is 10.5 togs, which makes it ideal for year-round use, particularly during the colder months. The duvet is in “winter weight” territory for home use too, and it felt just right for a chilly camping trip.
It comes with two matching pillowcases and packs down into a proper sturdy stuff sack (a reusable duffle bag) rather than a flimsy plastic bag that rips the second time you use it, making it genuinely ideal for camping, glamping and vanlife.
The verdict
I’d never used a coverless duvet before this trip, but I’m properly sold. This is warm; it feels lovely against the skin, and it packs down small enough to rival my single winter sleeping bag. I also love the fact that you can bung the whole thing in the wash, which gets rid of the hygiene worries I previously had.
Whether you want cosy tent vibes on a cold night away or you just fancy upgrading your winter bedding at home without the cover faff, the Night Lark Vintage Meadow Coverless Duvet Set is a genuinely lovely and cosy choice.
